The French Bedroom: 7 Antique French Beds That Will Never Date

French-bedroom

At Wallrocks we don’t aspire to the latest fads and fashions, for after all, they’re nothing more than that – fads. However, classical and elegant furniture that does not date and stands the test of time is critical in designing a beautiful interior and it is for this reason, that beautiful French bedrooms never date. Now before you stop us in our tracks here, we are not referring to shabby chic, the oft touted wannabe sidekick of a genuinely elegant French room. A French bedroom is exceptionally eclectic in it’s offering of variable inceptions, with soft and pretty, masculine Deco or Empire or flowing Louis XV to suit almost every far flung interior taste.

French Bedroom Wow Factor

Designers throughout history have typically (and rather obviously) taken the bed as the central focus of the bedroom and its fair to say that the double ensemble mattress just doesn’t quite cut the mustard in attempting wow factor for the centre of the room. What better way than elaborately book matched amboyna veneers headed by a gilded bronze eagle? For the newlywed lovers, a lovebird crested headboard – once a popular wedding gift – is a glorious ornament and the ever fanciful deco design, hard to beat.

7 French Bedroom Picks That Won’t Date

Here we have set our seven of the most beautiful French beds for a French bedroom that won’t date, so classic and unique in style that they require only the imagination to bring them to life in a space.

  1. A 19th century French Louis XVI queen size bed, cleaned and re-caned and decorated, this bed is typically Louis XVI in design with its curved Corneille corners in the head and foot, beautifully carved swags of roses and leaves in the footboard and centred with a carved  quiver of arrows symbolising love. The head is equally well adorned with carved wreath of roses with a central ribbon and a trellis of flowers cascading down the sides of the frame.
  2. A similar era and style, being 19th century French Louis XVI again. This bed is a more formal style to the last and of exceptional quality. The fine quality mahogany headboard with moulded pediment sets above an exquisite geometric parquetry panel of cross-banded mahogany flanked by a pair of gilded bronze wraths in the form of roses. The footboard is similarly decorated with three panels also inlaid and adorned in pierced high quality ormolu mounts. Note the exceptional detail of these mounts in the second and fourth photos in the gallery below. Enquire about this French Louis XVI bed here
  3. A four poster bed always makes a statement, and never more so than when it is inlaid and routed with gilded bronze like the one in this gallery. A fine quality mahogany frame inlaid in the headboard various exotic timbers in the form of cornucopia, scrolls, flowers and leaves flanked by a pair of fluted columns inlaid with gilded bronze mounts below a pair of turned and carved posts that meet a bonnet shaped top joining the footboard equally embellished with flowers and leaves and the whole joined by exquisite parquetry inlaid rails further mounted with gilded bronze in the form of olive leaves and ribbons. 4. The complete antithesis of the above described beds, this masculine and impressive 19th century French flame mahogany bed is another exceptional example, with its four imposing turned flame mahogany columns, and embellished with a gilded bronze Diana the Huntress on the footboard. This bed can be paired with many a traditional or modern scheme for an exceptional French bedroom. Enquire about this large French Empire bed.
  5. Deco and Empire never really go out of date, but rather are rehashed in a myriad of different forms throughout design history. This beautiful French Art Deco bed is quite exceptional. Inlaid with mother of pearl in the foot, the amboyna timber has been specifically selected for it’s flame like qualities and has been strategically book-matched on the footboard to create an extraordinary pattern. Inlaid with cross-banded timbers for further decoration, and mounted with the gilded bronze eagle, this bed will still be relevant one hundred years from now.
